One small step for fashion,
one giant leap for fashion kind.
Metallics have landed and
they’re not planning to take off anytime soon, so dig out those moon boots
because fashion just got spacey.
In 1969 man landed on the
moon, but fashion was already one step ahead by introducing space age to the
runways earlier in the decade. Andre Courreges and his ‘Moon Girl’ collection
showcasing ‘lunar whites’, clean-cut tailoring and styles that women hadn’t
dared to try before took fashion into the future, and now it wants to reminisce
and give space age style a revamp.
No longer are we restricted
to wearing stiff metallic fabrics, for what the new space age really represents
is the step forward in fashion we are able to make due to advances in
technology. Creativity can flow because of fewer limitations and designers can
make their ideas become reality.
Metallics have been on the
catwalks for a few seasons, but they’re not going anywhere this winter and designers
are taking note. Diane von Furstenberg took home the gold, showing jaw-dropping
70s inspired playsuits and countless wrap dresses – we would expect nothing
less – in glimmering Golds for the celebration of 40 years of her label.
However, other top designers
were also on point with metallic shine: Paco Rabanne went for sports luxe teaming
asymmetric silver midi skirts with bomber jackets, while Isabel Marant went to
war with military inspired camo greens and Dries Van Noten opted for printed
bronze stripes.
The Oscars were teeming with
shining celebs too: Angelina Jolie dripping in gold by Elie Saab, Cate Blanchet
putting sheer and metallic together to create a whimsical fairy-like effect and
Emma Watson channelling a heavy metal vibe in black Vera Wang.
Although metallics can be
seen as something to wear in an evening, the beauty is that it isn’t the case;
fashion is beyond telling people what is acceptable to wear at what time. And
there is nothing wrong with dressing up a little in the day time. Style maven Alexa
Chung has been spotted in a black and gold stripe midi paired with a chunky
knit jumper and if she can do it, anyone can. And a bonus? Forever 21 are
stocking hot pants in the same black and gold stripes.
After all, it’s never too
early to start stocking up for the next season. Silver collared leather jackets
are appearing at River Island, for red carpet glamour Topshop is the go-to
place and Zara are on the accessories front with silver strappy stilettos.
Whatever your style,
designers have shown the versatility of new metallics and their presence in our
lives doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon so we may as well buckle
ourselves in and enjoy the ride.
